After defeating the Sioux City Roller Dames on their home turf at the Rolling Along the River tournament last September, the Paper Valley Roller Girls (PVRG) knew that these girls wouldn’t be going down without a fight. The Dames made their way up to Wisconsin with vengeance on their minds.

The minute the first whistle blew, it was clear to the skaters of both teams that Sioux City was not the same team they had been six months prior. Demonstrating lots of fancy footwork and backwards skating, the Dames made it clear from the get go that they were determined to crush the PVRG.

PVRG quickly took the lead, with the second jam landing the girls with an 18 point jam from Chop Stick Ya, making the score 23 to 10, in favor of PVRG. The Dames quickly locked down on their defense, leaving PVRG without a point scored for the next 6 jams, until Kat Von Devious took the jammer line and scored another 5 points for PVRG, bringing the score to 28 to 35, in favor of the Dames.

With the Dames in the lead, they gave their jammers who’d been working double time (Sum Mo Payne, and Fun Size) a break, bringing out PBR for a back to back jam. Track cuts and clockwise blocking was proving to be a huge crutch to PVRG, with multiple blockers in the penalty box at the same time. The score bounced back and forth for most of the game, until Sum Mo Payne took the jammer line against Banana Ramya, scoring 15 points, and leaving Banana pointless, bringing the score to 60 to 78, in favor of the Dames.

Recognizing the strong players, PVRG cracked down on their defense against the strong jammers from Sioux City, specifically Mo Payne. Playing in every other jam, and then going into block, PVRG knew it was only a matter of time until the Dames endurance wore thin, and PVRG kept playing a slow steady game.

The second half showed just that. PVRG was left without a point scored during the first 4 consecutive jams, while the Dames’ jammers racked up points, bringing the score to 89 to 131, in favor of the Dames. Any fan at Skaters Edge could attest to the energy and the intensity of this bout as PVRG fought tooth and nail to make sure these ladies wouldn’t defeat them.

The Dames tried to pull some patient offense trickery, with Sum Mo Payne knocking Pissy Pistol off the jammer line right at the first whistle, and running to make her way behind her wall, waiting for Pissy to have to enter right behind her. Pissy played smart, not falling for the trap and the game was at a stand still for the full 2 minutes. The fans were not having it, and started jeering and booing the “stroller derby” that was disappointing for them to watch. The Dames quickly abandoned this approach, and reverted back to hard hitting roller derby we all know and love.

Chop Stick Ya had an incredible 17 point jam in the 2nd half, bringing the score to 111 to 139, in favor of the Dames, but PVRG’s incredible defense was working hard to keep the Dames’ jammer in line and preventing them from scoring. The real game changer was Pissy Pistol’s amazing 35 point power jam while the Dames’ jammer was spending 2 minutes in a penalty box. The ladies kept going at it for the remainder of the bout, until Sioux City finally fell to Paper Valley, the final score being 203 to 200.

After a very high intense bout from PVRG, history was in the making for the Green Bay Smackers as they hosted the first MRDA sanctioned bout in the state of Wisconsin against the Sioux City Kornstalkers. The Kornstalkers were the first team the Smackers beat in 2011 at the Rolling Along the River tournament in Iowa. The Kornstalkers came to Wisconsin with a vengeance against the Smackers.

The beginning of the bout was pretty even as both teams were only able to make one scoring pass in a jam, but not until Sioux City’s Nileateher scored a 15 point jam giving them the lead 62-24. Barbarossa and Camel Joe followed Nileather’s lead by scoring another 15 point jam and a 25 point jam. Smackers’ jammers were struggling and were only able to make one more scoring pass for the first half. Penalties were also a big problem as most of the half the Smackers had only 2 or 3 blockers on the track. The first half ended with a score of 122-41 in favor of the Kornstalkers.

The Smackers were not able to handle the full roster from Sioux City in the second half as the first two jams, Sioux City scored a 17 and 24 point jam. Smacker’s jammer Shock Strap tried to bring some life into the game scoring a 15 point jam, but penalties were killing the Smackers as four players fouled out (seven major penalties) and two were ejected. In the last 10 jams the Smackers were only able to score 4 points and the game ended sadly in a forfeit by the head ref with the final score Kornstalkers 255, Smackers 68.

The Smackers would like to give an apology for our actions from this bout. Emotions were high for all of us that day and it got the best of us as we ended up being a poor example of good sportsmanship. This is not how we believe the game of roller derby should be. We apologize to everyone that has worked to make this sport what it is and we are working together to prevent theses actions from happening again. This is not the outcome we wanted and we are very sorry to all those we disappointed and disrespected.

<del></del>The evening started with two new home teams for the Paper Valley Roller Girls (PVRG) mixed with all level of skaters. The names of the new teams are the Jedi Mind Chicks and the Polka Dotties. With this being the first time these two teams have played, no one knew what to expect from these two teams.

The night started well for the Polka Dotties as they scored 24 points in the first three jams and the Jedi Mind Chicks were stuck at 0. The Polka Dotties kept a nice lead over the Jedi Mind Chicks for most of the first half at 44-22, but then for the last 8 jams the force was strong with the Jedi Mind

Chicks as Polka Dotties’ jammers Kat Von Dvious and S.P. Rocket ran into some foul trouble, which lead to some crucial power jams resulting in a 23 point jam by Blazin’ Britches, and two 15 point jams from Chop StickYa and Scully Crossbones. After scoring 63 consecutive points, the Jedi Mind Chicks led at the end of the first half 85-44.

The second half of the bout started slow for both teams, but the Polka Dotties slowly closed the point margin gap as the Polka Dotties’ blockers used a force of their own against the Jedi Mind Chicks’ jammers. The Polka Dotties’ jammers scored a couple of 10 point jams and a big 20 point jam from Kat Von Dvious regaining the lead at 93-92. Deviled Meg then scored a 9 point jam, giving the Jedi Mind Chicks the lead of 101-93. After that Pissy Pistol scored a 15 point jam for the fourth lead change of the game. After that there were polka dots all over the track as Kat Von Dvious scored another 25 point jam and Banana RamYa, a 24 point jam ending this exciting bout at Polka Dotties 175 to the Jedi Mind Chicks 123.

The second bout of the evening was a rematch of last year’s brother-sister rivalry between the PVRG All Stars and Green Bay Smackers. The PVRG All Stars beat the Smackers last year 160-80 and the Smackers wanted some with a vengeance as they did right away in the beginning of the bout. The Smackers’ defense held PVRG scoreless for the first seven jams and PVRG’s Swiss Miss was ejected in the fifth jam of the game, which was a major loss for the All Stars. Kat Von Dvious scored the first points for PVRG as the Smackers had a lead of 39-11. The first half was a struggle for PVRG as they were sent to the penalty box 21 times compared to 8 times for the Smackers. The Smackers’ jammers took advantage of the smaller packs as 5 Smackers’ jammers scored 10+ jams which helped the Smackers keep a commanding lead of 120-29 at the end of the first half.

The first half did not bring down the spirit of the PVRG All Stars as they quickly racked up a 9 point and 14 point jam from Kat Von Dvious and Scully Crossbones. Smackers’ jammer, POW!der responded with a 16 point jam, but the Smackers’ jammers were running into some trouble from PVRG’s blocking as the Smackers were scoreless for the next 5 jams. During those five jams PVRG put up some big points from Chop StickYa scoring 22 points, Banana Ramya scoring 9 points and Scully Crossbones scoring 10 points.

Within the last few jams of the bout, Smackers’ jammer, Shock Strap ran into some foul trouble; getting sent to the penalty box for three consecutive jams for illegal procedures and track cuts. Taking advantage of those power jams, Scully Crossbones scored a 30 point jam

followed by a 25 point jam by Banana Ramya giving PVRG the lead for the first time in the bout with a score 176-163. Shock Strap did not want to let his team down as he came out of the penalty box and scored a huge 25 point jam giving the lead back to the Smackers at 188-176. With an 8 point differential, the bout was down to the last jam with Chop StickYa and POW!der at the jammer line. Both jammers fought hard to get lead jammer and POW!der was sent to the penalty box for a multi-player block. Chop StickYa was on a scoring rampage as she scored 14 points, but POW!der had enough time to get out of the penalty box and score 4 points leaving the Smackers victorious and a final score of 192-190.

This was the last home bout of the 2012 season with the Paper Valley Roller Girls. This was a big bout as PVRG All-Stars (#22NC) took on the North Star Super Novas (#18NC) and the Smackers played against their derby brothers the Milwaukee Blitzdkrieg. Plus we raised canned goods for the St. Patrick’s Food Pantry of Green Bay.

The night started with a mixer as the PVRG Flying Squirrels got mixed with players from Peoria, Illinois and Escanaba, Michigan into a black and white team. The bout started with a quick 4 points for the Black Team from PVRG’s Bawlz and then the White Team responded back with a 5 point jam from Peoria’s Pixie Whiplash. The score stayed relatively close until the last two jams as White scored 10 point and Black scored 0 leaving the score White 51 – Black 39 at the end of the half. The White Team started with some good momentum in the second-half as PVRG’s BananaRamya scored a 19 point power jam leaving the score 74-48. The Black Team’s Devilish Vixen shaved off White’s lead with a 14 point jam with a score of 77-62. BananaRamya was on a scoring spree with a 9 point and 10 point jam scoring 51 of the 61 points by the White Team. The final score of the game was White 112 – 93 Black.

To begin the second-half we had a special guest as Green Bay’s Mayor Jim Schmitt aka “Tough Schmitt” blew the first whistle for the Paper Valley All-Star bout. With the recent releasing of WFTDA’s 2nd quarter ranking, PVRG is ranked #22 in the North Central region and North Star Supernovas ranked #18. The bout started well for PVRG as their blockers Loredai Killmore, Blazin’ Britches, and Amanda Spank held the Supernovas to be scoreless for the first 7 jams. PVRG had a commanding lead of 34-0. North Star’s Katrina Hit did have a big 14 point jam, but was quickly diminished by T-Racer’s 13 point jam ending the first-half with PVRG leading 66-40. The second-half was pretty even for both teams as PVRG earned lead jam for 13 times and North Star 10 times. PVRG was able to capitalize on some big jams as Neva scored a 15 point power jam increasing the lead to 91-44. T-Racer had a strong half scoring 24 of PVRG’s 65 points. The Paper Valley All-Stars had a #dominated the game with an upset and a final score of 131-78.

Last bout of the night was the Smackers against the Milwaukee Blitzdkrieg. This was an historic bout as this was the first time the two teams played each other and the beginning of a competitive rivalry . The beginning of the bout was very low scoring as the score was 9-8 Blitzdkrieg at the end of the 7th jam. Things started to pick up for the Smackers as PK Pantysnatcher scored 9 points, Shock Strap scored 12 points, and BS scored 17 points. The Smackers lead the game 46-15. The Blitzdkrieg was fighting hard as D-Rek scored a 10 point jam, slimming the Smackers lead 55-27. Shock Strap scored another 9 points and Tim Mature had a 15 point power jam ending the first-half Smackers 72 – Blitzdkrieg 33. The Blitzdkrieg was hungry for the win as Bear Kylls and Ben Hurt scored a 12 and 11 point jam early in the second half with a score 89-64. Pk Pantysnatcher didn’t let the point margin get any closer as he scored 43 points in his next three jams. The exciting bout ended with a final score of 174-92 for the Smackers.

It was not just a good night on the track, as the Smackers and PVRG collected 5 bags of canned goods and raised $175 for the St. Patrick’s Food Pantry of Green Bay. The Green Bay Press Gazette wrote an article about us the following day.

July 14th was the second triple-header for the Green Bay Smackers and Paper Valley Roller Girls as it was an amazing night of roller derby.

The night started with the Paper Valley Flying Squirrels against the Mid-State Sisters of Skate (MSSOS) of Stevens Point. Squirrels took the lead against MSSOS with some quick points by Bawlz, Deviled Meg, and Bettie Munster as they had a lead of 27-8. MSSOS was able to catch up as SiMonster had a 13 point jam bringing the score PVRG 27-25. Shortly after, MSSOS’s Natural Born Chaos had a 10 point jam tying the game at 35. Kat Von D-vious responded back with a 10 point jam. At the end of the half MSSOS took charge with a 15 point jam from Deja Vu and a 9 point jam from SiMonster and ended the half with a score of MSSOS 60, PVRG 46. Starting the second-half it was still anyone’s game as PVRG’s Bawlz raced around the track and scored 15 points leaving PVRG behind by one point. The Squirrels were behind by less than 10 points for most of the half, but then MSSOS’s Deja Vu, scored a 20 point jam with a score of 90-66. Unfortunately MSSOS’s defense was able to leave the Squirrel’s jammers scoreless for seven consecutive jams and the final score was MSSOS 134, PVRG 78.

Then PVRG All-Stars played Fargo-Moorhead Derby Girls. This was the most exciting the bout of the night as both teams did well blocking the jammers keeping many of the jams low scoring. Fargo-Moorhead took the lead right away in the first-half and had the biggest lead of 23 points at 37-14. Then things turned around for PVRG with a 15 point jam from Swiss Miss closing the lead 29 to 37. The very next jam PVRG took the lead as Chop Stickya scored a 19 point jam with a score of 48-37. The All-Stars kept the lead for the rest of the 1st half with a score of PVRG 59, Fargo-

Moorhead 46. The second-half was close the whole time as there were 4 lead changes in the half. Fargo-Moorhead’s Grateful Red had a 13 point jam with Fargo-Moorhead leading 84-76. Then PVRG striked back with a 9 point jam from T-Racer followed by a 19 point jam from Gynomite leading PVRG to a score of 104-90. Fargo-Moorhead did not give up as the last jam of the game PVRG was leading 112-102. On the last jam Fargo-Moorhead’s Sarin Dipity got lead jam, but was sent to the penalty box. Sarin Dipity did score 10 points, but Swiss Miss scored 11 points with a final score of PVRG 123, Fargo Moorhead 112.

Last bout of the night was the Green Bay Smackers against the Bisman Bomberz who was playing in their first bout. Smackers took a big lead early in the bout with a 20 point jam from PK Pantysnatcher. POW!der and Speed DevAl followed suit by also scoring 20 point jams and ended the first-half with a score of 124 to 6. In the second-half, blockers B.S., Attractive Nuisance, and Ctrl+Alt+Destroy continued to be huge threats for the Bisman’s jammers as they had a hard time scoring points. With the quick skating of the Smacker’s jammers the bout ended with a final score of 233-34.

Our next and last home bout of the season is August 11th at the Cornerstone Community Center starting at 4pm. Remember to bring two canned goods as you can get $1 off you normal ticket and $5 off the All You Can Drink Party Deck ticket.
